LASIK vision correction surgery is an extremely precise operation that should be performed by a doctor with considerable experience and meticulous skills. Am I a good candidate for refractive surgery?

Good LASIK surgery candidates are at least 18 years old and have healthy corneas. Their prescription should have remained relatively stable for the past 12 months. Is LASIK vision correction surgery safe?

As with any operation, there are some risks associated with LASIK surgery. There is a risk of being over/under corrected and needing a follow-up LASIK surgery. Patients can also get eye infections, wrinkles in the LASIK flap, growths in the epithelium, and more. However, this extremely precise procedure is also very safe and effective. Over the course of ten years, the FDA conducted tests on the computer-controlled excimer lasers that are used during LASIK surgery and approved them for use in 1995. We only use state of the art technology. In fact, the LASIK procedure we use for most patients is the only technique endorsed by NASA. The accuracy of the excimer laser and our surgeons' extensive training and experience ensure that all our patients who undergo LASIK vision correction receive the finest care at our practice.

How do I care for my eyes after LASIK vision correction surgery?

Before your LASIK procedure at our practice, our eye care specialists will give you detailed information about how to care for your eyes after the operation. Our specialists take the time to explain how to use prescription antibiotic eye drops and other medications to make sure your surgery is successful. They will also check your eyes the day after surgery and schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your eyesight.

Will my insurance cover LASIK vision correction surgery?

Most insurance companies will not cover LASIK or any other laser vision correction procedure since these treatments are considered elective. However, we will be happy to double check your insurance plan when you come in for a free LASIK consultation at our practice. If your procedure is not covered by insurance, our staff will be happy to explain your payment options to help finance the cost of LASIK surgery. Will I experience pain during LASIK surgery?

We use anesthetic drops to numb the eyes prior to LASIK surgery, so most patients do not feel any pain or discomfort during the LASIK procedure. However, some patients experience a mild sensation similar to an eyelash caught in the eye during the first night following LASIK surgery. Patients who have undergone a LASIK vision correction procedure typically experience little to no pain after surgery.

When will I be able to go back to work after LASIK surgery?

Because most LASIK vision correction patients have functional vision within 24 hours, they are able to return to work the day after surgery. However, activities such as swimming in salt water and jogging should be avoided for one to two weeks after surgery. Patients from out of town are able to fly home the day after their procedure.

Is LASIK vision correction surgery permanent?

LASIK vision correction surgery is a permanent procedure. However, changes in vision can occur over time if the patient's prescription is expected to change. If necessary, LASIK enhancement surgery is provided at our and Centennial vision center for up to one year after the original procedure at no additional charge. What is the difference between being farsighted and presbyopic?

Individuals who are farsighted cannot focus on objects that are up close, and may have some difficulty focusing on objects that are far away as well because of a defect or imperfection of the eye. This condition is known as hyperopia. Individuals suffering presbyopia experience the same difficulty reading or focusing on objects that are up close. However, presbyopia occurs as part of the natural aging process. Presbyopia affects everyone, and usually occurs in the early to mid 40s. Although individuals with hyperopia can have their vision corrected with LASIK or other vision correction surgery, presbyopic individuals cannot. However, our surgeons can use a technique called monovision to help treat people with presbyopia.
