  • Do not show any signs of eye infections, injuries, or other health issues
  • Do not show signs of corneal scarring
  • Do not suffer from autoimmune disorders
  • Are not pregnant or nursing at the time of surgery
  • Are fully aware of the risks involved with LASIK vision correction surgery and maintain realistic expectations for results

LASIK Vision Correction Procedure

Patients who undergo LASIK surgery at our Centennial center near Denver are assured an exceptional LASIK vision correction experience. Dr. Spivack and his team of eye care specialists are dedicated to ensuring patients are comfortable before, during, and after the procedure.

Before LASIK Surgery

You should plan to arrive at our Centennial vision center at least one hour before the scheduled procedure. After checking in, you will be given a sedative to help you relax. A technician will administer anesthetic eye drops to prepare for surgery. When your eyes are sufficiently numb, an eyelid holder will be placed over them to prevent blinking during surgery.

During LASIK Surgery

During LASIK vision correction surgery, the surgeon uses a microkeratome or a Blade-free laser to create a hinged flap on the cornea. The surgeon folds the flap back, and you are asked to look directly into a target light while an excimer laser reshapes the cornea. For absolute accuracy, the excimer laser is programmed with your individual eye information.

The application of the excimer laser varies according to the type of treatment you need. To treat myopia, the excimer laser will remove tissue from the center of the cornea to make the cornea flatter. To treat hyperopia, the excimer laser will remove tissue from the outer areas of the cornea to make the cornea steeper. To treat astigmatism, the excimer laser will reshape the cornea to be more spherical than cone shaped. The entire laser process takes less than two minutes.

After the excimer laser reshapes the cornea, the corneal flap is folded back into place. No stitches are necessary — the flap will bond on its own in a matter of seconds.

After LASIK Surgery

After the LASIK vision correction procedure, drops are put in the eyes. Your eyes are then examined by the surgeon. You should expect blurry vision at first, but will notice that your vision will improve quickly after surgery. Your eyes are then shielded for protection. Because this limits your ability to see, someone should drive you home.

You should plan to relax the rest of the day. You may experience some mild discomfort, sensitivity to light, or swelling for up to 24 hours after LASIK vision correction surgery. Over-the-counter pain medication can be taken for pain relief. You will be asked to return the next day for a follow-up examination, and can usually resume normal activities at this time.

At Spivack Vision Center, our surgeons believe patient education is important for helping our patients make an informed decision about vision correction surgery. We take the time to address all of our patients' questions and concerns regarding LASIK vision correction and all our other refractive procedures. Below is a list of frequently asked questions regarding LASIK vision correction. If you have further questions, please contact our practice, and we will be happy to help you.

Who should perform my LASIK vision correction surgery?

LASIK vision correction surgery is an extremely precise operation that should be performed by a doctor with considerable experience and meticulous skills. Your vision is very precious, which is why it is important to carefully consider which surgeon is most qualified to perform your LASIK surgery. In order to ensure successful results and minimize the risk of post-surgical problems, you should choose a surgeon who has undergone extensive training and take the time to ask the surgeon about his or her training and experience. Dr. Lawrence Spivack and Dr. Terrence Spencer are experienced and knowledgeable surgeons who have used the latest in vision correction technology to perform more than 40,000 refractive procedures combined in the Denver area. Because of their experience in the refractive surgery field, our professionals have earned reputations for being among the top surgeons in the nation, and have been voted number one trusted doctors by area physicians. Contact our Centennial LASIK vision correction surgery practice to learn more about Dr. Spivack and his associates.

Am I a good candidate for refractive surgery?

Good refractive surgery candidates are at least 18 years old and have healthy corneas. Their prescription should have remained relatively stable for the past 12 months. If you are interested in LASIK vision correction or another refractive surgery, please contact our practice to schedule a free consultation to learn if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Is LASIK vision correction surgery safe?

As with any operation, there are some risks associated with LASIK surgery. There is a risk of being over/under corrected and needing a follow-up LASIK surgery. Patients can also get eye infections, wrinkles in the LASIK flap, growths in the epithelium, and more. However, this extremely precise procedure is also very safe and effective. Over the course of ten years, the FDA conducted tests on the computer-controlled excimer lasers that are used during LASIK surgery and approved them for use in 1995. We only use state of the art technology. In fact, the LASIK procedure we use for most patients is the only technique endorsed by NASA. The accuracy of the excimer laser and our surgeons' extensive training and experience ensure that all our patients who undergo LASIK vision correction receive the finest care at our practice.

How do I care for my eyes after LASIK vision correction surgery?

Before your LASIK procedure at our practice, our eye care specialists will give you detailed information about how to care for your eyes after the operation. Our specialists take the time to explain how to use prescription antibiotic eye drops and other medications to make sure your surgery is successful. They will also check your eyes the day after surgery and schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your eyesight.

Will my insurance cover LASIK vision correction surgery?

Most insurance companies will not cover LASIK or any other laser vision correction procedure since these treatments are considered elective. However, we will be happy to double check your insurance plan when you come in for a free LASIK consultation at our practice. If your procedure is not covered by insurance, our staff will be happy to explain your payment options to help finance the cost of LASIK surgery. LASIK surgery may also be tax deductible depending on your filing status. Please contact one of our vision centers near Denver to schedule a free LASIK vision correction surgery consultation.

Will I experience pain during LASIK surgery?

We use anesthetic drops to numb the eyes prior to LASIK surgery, so most patients do not feel any pain or discomfort during the LASIK procedure. However, some patients experience a mild sensation similar to an eyelash caught in the eye during the first night following LASIK surgery. Patients who have undergone a LASIK vision correction procedure typically experience little to no pain after surgery.

When will I be able to go back to work after LASIK surgery?

Because most LASIK vision correction patients have functional vision within 24 hours, they are able to return to work the day after surgery. However, activities such as swimming in salt water and jogging should be avoided for one to two weeks after surgery. Patients from out of town are able to fly home the day after their procedure.

Is LASIK vision correction surgery permanent?

LASIK vision correction surgery is a permanent procedure. However, changes in vision can occur over time if the patient's prescription is expected to change. If necessary, LASIK enhancement surgery is provided at our and Centennial vision center for up to one year after the original procedure at no additional charge. LASIK patients can also enroll in our exclusive Spivack 20/20 LASIK Lifetime Commitment program, which provides additional operations at no additional cost. Contact our practice today to learn more about our exclusive Spivack 20/20 LASIK Lifetime Commitment program.

What is the difference between being farsighted and presbyopic?

Individuals who are farsighted cannot focus on objects that are up close, and may have some difficulty focusing on objects that are far away as well because of a defect or imperfection of the eye. This condition is known as hyperopia. Individuals suffering presbyopia experience the same difficulty reading or focusing on objects that are up close. However, presbyopia occurs as part of the natural aging process. Presbyopia affects everyone, and usually occurs in the early to mid 40s. Although individuals with hyperopia can have their vision corrected with LASIK or other vision correction surgery, presbyopic individuals cannot. However, our surgeons can use a technique called monovision to help treat people with presbyopia.
